Abstract

Food insecurity, driven by climate change, economic disruptions, and conflicts, remains a critical global challenge, with sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) experiencing some of the most severe impacts. These challenges are further compounded by forced displacement within SSA, as climate change disrupts livelihoods and fuels extensive refugee movements. This forced relocation exacerbates the pressure on host communities while offering opportunities to stimulate the local
economy and improve infrastructure. One affected country is Zambia, where smallholder farmers face persistent challenges from adverse weather conditions, low agricultural productivity, and resource scarcity. Furthermore, the country experienced a significant influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), adding to the pressure on local resources.
The thesis collectively addresses refugee integration and sustainable development in Zambia. In the present context, a case study from a region in Northern Zambia called Mantapala is primarily analyzed. The Mantapala refugee settlement is used to explore host-refugee dynamics within the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF). The CRRF is a global initiative to promote responsibility-sharing and long-term solutions for refugees by integrating them into national systems and supporting host communities. Through a focus on sustainable food security, resource management, and public opinion, the research highlights how integration strategies can address vulnerabilities and promote resilience among host and refugee populations.
These strategies incorporate socio-economic factors, such as employment opportunities and community collaboration, alongside environmental aspects, such as deforestation mitigation and sustainable land use.
