From 04.-08.05.2026 the LUH Green Office organises a week on Sustainability in Teaching and Learning in coorperation with other universities in Hannover.

Sustainability Week at Leibniz University Hannover is being organised for the fifth time this year by the Green Office in collaboration with other universities in Hanover, meaning that events will take place across several university campuses. The aim of the week is to raise awareness of sustainability issues, discuss current challenges, and jointly develop and test solution-oriented approaches. During this week, all LUH lecturers are encouraged to address sustainability topics relating to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their courses.

In addition, a supporting programme featuring various activities and workshops will be offered from 4–6 May. In keeping with this year’s theme, ‘Summer, Sun, Sustainability’, there will be opportunities to soak up some sun, including a litter-picking campaign and two cycle tours. To ensure that bicycles are in the best possible condition for the tours, free safety and technical checks will be available again this year. Students and staff are warmly invited to take part in the various programme events!

Most of the events and activities are free of charge and do not require registration. Where registration is required and there may be a charge, please refer to the event description for further details and follow the relevant links for more information.

  • HsH Bike Festival to mark the start of Campusradeln (Campus Linden, from 11 am)

Join us – on 4 May 2026, we’ll be celebrating the start of the season with the HsH Bike Festival. Where? At the Linden Campus – When? From 11am – What? Look forward to a bike check, a bike swap meet and other stands focusing on cycling mobility. A small B stage with Music and ice cream from the Studierendenwerk at student prices invite you to linger. All students and staff from the DiNaMo partner institutions (LUH, MHH, TIB and HsH) are welcome to attend.

    Bike check by BIU:
The Bürgerinitiative Umweltschutz e.V. (Citizens’ Initiative for Environmental Protection) is offering a free bike check for students and staff; no prior registration is required.

    Bike swap:
The bike swap offers second-hand bikes for sale at student prices; no prior registration is required. This is a private sale for which the university is not responsible.

Tuesday (05.05.2026)

  • Free safety and technical check for bicycles (Contine, 11.30 am–3.00 pm)

In collaboration with the Bürgerinitiative Umweltschutz Hannover (Citizens' Initiative for Environmental Protection Hannover), LUH is offering a bike check-up on Tuesday in front of Contine, where minor repairs to your bikes (pumping up tyres, oiling the chain, adjusting the gears, etc.) can be carried out on the spot by the Citizens' Initiative. For those interested, instructions on how to do these repairs yourself will also be provided.

  • Free anti-theft coding with the ADFC (Contine, 11.30 am–3.00 pm)

The ADFC bicycle registration scheme makes it easier to identify the original owner of a found bicycle in the event of theft. Furthermore, the registration acts as a deterrent against theft, as it discourages thieves and makes it more difficult to resell the bicycle illegally. To register your bicycle, you must bring proof of purchase or ownership!

  • Free bike fitting with TK (Contine, 11.30 am–3.10 pm) (Registration required!)

Do you experience pain when cycling? Not for much longer, thanks to TK’s free bike fitting service! The better your bike is tailored to your body, the safer and more efficient your ride will be on roads and cycle paths. The bike fitting sessions will take place from 11.30 am to 3.10 pm in 20-minute slots. You must book these in advance for free via the link below! Register for free (external link).

  • Clothing swap party (hanOMacke, 11.30 am – 5.30 pm)

At the clothing swap party, you can bring along your second-hand clothes in good condition and swap them for items donated by others. Not only can you add new pieces to your wardrobe this way, but you’re also actively contributing to sustainability by helping to break the harmful cycle of fast fashion.

  • Sustainable Coffee Workshop (University Sports Centre, 2.00–4.30 pm) (Registration required!)

Brew on a budget – Coffee is part of everyday life for many students – but what’s actually in the cup? In this workshop, you’ll learn what makes good coffee and how you can make delicious, sustainable coffee yourself.

In the theory section, we’ll explore some fascinating questions about coffee together: How does caffeine affect our bodies and our ability to concentrate? Which brewing method contains how much caffeine – and how much coffee is actually still healthy? What social and environmental factors play a role in coffee consumption – from cultivation to preparation?
In the practical part of the workshop, you’ll learn to use various low-budget brewing methods (e.g. French press, AeroPress, hand filter) and experiment with how the bean, roast, grind size and brewing technique affect flavour and quality. Feel free to bring your own coffee equipment (if you have any) – such as a hand filter, French press, AeroPress or hand grinder – to get tips on your setup.

Register here (external link, Content: German only).

  • ADFC bike ride (Königsworther Platz, 2.30–5.00 pm) (Please register in advance)

This relaxed bike ride, organised by the ADFC, offers a lovely opportunity to get to know different parts of Hanover better. On Tuesday’s ride, you’ll cycle past lakes and the Eilenriede forest. There’ll be a stop at a café for refreshments along the way. Participation is free, but registration is requested. You can also register on the spot at the last minute. You can find more information on the ADFC website (external link, Content: German only).

  • Litter-picking campaign (Welfengarten, 3–5 pm)

The Welfengarten is a lovely place to enjoy the summer sun. But it’s only really enjoyable if you’re not tripping over litter left lying around at every turn. Equipped with bin bags, litter pickers and gloves provided by the LUH, you can get involved in the Green Office’s litter-picking campaign and help tidy up the Welfengarten and the area around the castle.

We’d love for you to register using the keyword “Müllsammelaktion”(litter-picking campaign) via email at greenoffice@uni-hannover.de

Wednesday (06.05.2026)

  • Clothes swap party (MHH Building I2, student lounge, 10.00 am–3.00 pm)

At the clothing swap party, you can bring along your second-hand clothes in good condition and swap them for items donated by others. Not only can you add new pieces to your wardrobe this way, but you’re also actively contributing to sustainability by helping to break the harmful cycle of fast fashion.

In collaboration with the Bürgerinitiative Umweltschutz Hannover (Citizens' Initiative for Environmental Protection Hannover), LUH is offering a bike check-up on Wednesday in front of the main cafeteria, where minor repairs to your bikes (pumping up tyres, oiling the chain, adjusting the gears, etc.) can be carried out on the spot by the Citizens' Initiative. Last winter semester, the MitfahrCampus pilot project was launched at our university to promote carpooling via the RideBee platform. We invite you to join us for a discussion to provide an insight into the project and to share our experiences with the platform so far. We look forward to receiving your feedback and suggestions for improvement, and we are also happy to answer any questions you may have. Regardless of whether you have used the platform before, your perspective is valuable to us in any case – we are also very interested in hearing about any reservations you may have.
