Abstract

This paper investigates the prediction of sub-conductor circulating currents in hydro generators. First, an analytical field calculation approach, based on Biot-Savart law and Schwarz-Christoffel mappings is presented. Different field effects of both the stator and rotor are investigated and discussed. The analytical method also covers the calculation of the impedance matrix for a Roebel bar including effects inside the stator core. Finally, sub-conductor circulating currents are calculated based on the field calculation and the impedance matrix. The analytically calculated field and sub-conductor currents are compared to FE simulation results of a generator. One of the Roebel bars is modelled in detail inside the core as well as in the end region, including twelve twisted sub-conductors.
