Abstract

The German distribution grids are operating close to their maximum limit due to the integration of new loads and decentralized power generation. Especially, the medium voltage grid is burdened. In order to create more capacities and ensure a secure operation, grid reinforcement and grid expansion are necessary. In this regard, two approaches redesigning the existing grid can be applied. Both approaches are formed a grid extension program for the medium-voltage (MV) grid. The first approach represents the redesign of the topology of the medium voltage grid. The second approach describes the choice of the type as well as the number of parallel transmission elements and uses the voltage stability and minimal short-circuit current as design relevant boundary conditions. The boundary conditions count for the normal and disturbed operation and must be held. Therefore, both states are described as an optimization problem and calculate by a commercial solver. The solution of the optimization problem represents the most cost efficient choice of transmission element while avoiding off limit conditions.
