Abstract

High demand for parking exists in many urban centres, contributing to traffic congestion and driver frustration. Various approaches to relieve parking pressure are implemented already in practice, which, despite their positive influence, have not yet eliminated the fundamental challenge. This paper presents a significant contribution - a conceptual model of park-and-ridesharing that reduces parking pressure by applying last-mile ridesharing in return for managed parking. We will demonstrate that ridesharing only for the last mile controls effectively for the general unwillingness in the public of ridesharing. Results show that a significant ratio of travellers, considering their utility function, would use such a ridesharing system. In addition to fewer vehicles entering the urban centre, park-and-ridesharing also reduces the waiting and searching time for parking in high travel demand scenarios. Thus, it has potential to reduce traffic and parking burden in urban centres.
