Abstract

OPEN CYCLES focuses on Görlitz-Zgorzelec as a laboratory for urban activation and circular design on an urban scale. Existing spatial situations, vacant buildings, and cultural resources are reimagined and related to the dynamics of the border triangle between Germany, Poland, and Czechia. The aim is to use a design perspective to open up spaces of possibility and networks that bring together living, working, production, culture, and community in new ways. There is space available in Görlitz–Zgorzelec – but how can it be activated, reimagined, and designed for the future? How can economic innovation, social engagement, and creative cooperation be strengthened? New urban perspectives across borders can range from the conversion and reactivation of vacant buildings to new connections, the expansion of the campus as an educational space, and the development of the Kahlbaumareal. On a larger scale, the focus on Görlitz-Zgorzelec is placed in the context of structural change in the post-mining regions of Lusatia and Silesia.
