Background and Objectives
In March 2015, the LUH Executive Board decided to draw up an Integrated Climate Protection Plan.
In 2022, the Integrated Climate Protection Concept (Content: German only) was updated and expanded. The revised version was published in early 2023. The update was prompted by the decision to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2031 as part of the Guidelines for Climate and Environmental Protection.
In order to vigorously pursue the climate protection targets set at LUH, funds will be available from the 2026 financial year onwards for the implementation of measures under the Integrated Climate Protection Concept.
The objective of the funding programme is to support measures under the Integrated Climate Protection Concept that
- lead to a measurable reduction in CO2 emissions and/or
- have so far been implemented to a limited extent or inadequately, or are still in their infancy (‘seed funding’)
Projects dealing with the energy-efficient refurbishment of buildings, the enhancement of biodiversity, sustainable mobility and the adaptation of the campus to climate change are particularly eligible for funding. Teaching projects that contribute to sustainable or climate-adapted campus development are also eligible.
Application conditions
-
How much funding is available for applications?
A maximum of €300,000 is available per financial year to fund measures under the Integrated Climate Protection Strategy (Content: German only). Individual applications must not exceed this amount. Applications must be for a minimum of €50,000; applications for less than this amount will not be funded.
-
Do the projects have to relate to the Integrated Climate Protection Concept?
Yes, all applications must be directly linked to at least one measure set out in LUH’s Integrated Climate Protection Strategy (Content: German only). Please also refer to the application form. Applicants must demonstrate the extent to which the project will lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions. Alternatively, projects relating to measures that have so far been implemented to a limited extent or inadequately, or which are still in their infancy (‘seed funding’), are also eligible for funding.
Teaching projects that contribute to sustainable or climate-adapted campus development (e.g. buildings, outdoor design) are also particularly eligible for funding. Cross-disciplinary or interdisciplinary projects are prioritised. Funding is provided exclusively for concepts with a long-term impact and/or an innovative character (‘flagship project’).
The Green Office is happy to provide advice.
-
How do I submit the applications?
Please submit your applications to the LUH Green Office exclusively in digital form via the email address greenoffice@uni-hannover.de. Application forms can be found here.
-
What criteria are used to assess the applications?
- Compliance with the requirements of the funding program (e.g., application amount, duration)
- Reference to the Integrated Climate Protection Concept
- Degree of innovation of the project
- Climate protection potential (quantitative/qualitative)
- Feasibility of the project
- Cost-benefit ratio
- Impact of the project and multiplier effect Sustainability
- Long-term nature of the project
-
When will I receive the approved funds?
Funds are allocated to the applicant institution once the project has been approved. This usually takes place at the start of the semester following the application deadline.
-
What is the maximum allowed duration of the project?
The project duration should not exceed two years. Ideally, the funds should be spent in the financial year for which they were requested.
-
What are the application deadlines, and when will I receive a response to my application?
In 2026, there will be two application deadlines: applications may be submitted by 15 June 2026 and by 1 November 2026. Applicants will receive a response by the start of the following semester (1 October 2026 or 1 April 2027).
In subsequent years, there will be only one application deadline per year. Applications may be submitted by 1 November of each year for the following financial year. -
Who can apply?
All departments and staff members at LUH are eligible to apply. Student projects are not eligible for funding under this scheme.
-
Who decides whether to fund applications?
The Green Office team, in collaboration with the Senate Working Group on Sustainability, reviews the applications received, assesses their relevance to LUH’s Integrated Climate Protection Strategy (Content: German only) and their alignment with the funding programme’s objectives, and subsequently makes a recommendation to the Executive Board. The Executive Board decides whether to approve the applications.
-
Does a final report need to be produced at the end of the project, and what happens once the project has finished?
At the end of the project period, a final report must be submitted, including visual documentation (photos, video). Completed initiatives will be reported on via the Green Office website, amongst other channels. A template for the final report can be found here.
Once the measure has been completed, the Green Office will verify the proper use of funds in consultation with Department 5. Approved funds that have not been spent will be returned to the funding programme for further use. If an applicant organisation has spent more than the approved amount, it must finance the additional expenditure from its own resources.
