Energy Cost Budgeting

Leibniz University Hannover is undertaking a project to introduce energy cost budgeting in order to achieve its climate and environmental protection targets in accordance with the Guidelines for Climate and Environmental Protection. The university’s Integrated Climate Protection Concept (Content: Germn only), which was updated and expanded in 2023, makes it clear that reducing overall energy consumption is necessary to achieve the goal of climate neutrality. Furthermore, LUH’s energy costs are rising annually, and legal requirements demand further efforts to reduce consumption.

Objective

The project aims to raise staff awareness of energy use by presenting energy costs and consumption transparently and billing them on a decentralised basis. This is intended to highlight potential savings and motivate staff to play an active role in climate and resource conservation. Accompanying training sessions and workshops are designed to help identify individual opportunities for energy savings. Staff are encouraged to implement appropriate measures either independently or in collaboration with Department 3 – Building Management. The aim is to reduce both overall energy consumption and energy costs. Through energy cost budgeting, the University hopes to bring about a sustainable change in energy awareness and consumption, thereby realising both environmental and economic benefits.
